KMFDM’s Los Angeles stop on the Kein Mitleid tour was better than the best. Great set list, special guest, and awesome sound made it a night to remember.
Before the band took to the stage, two openers warmed up the crowd. Legion Within and Australian duo called Angel Spit. Legion Within reminded of a harder, noisier Bauhaus. Angel Spit was a great act to see. A gorgeous female singer with an out of control synth player worked together really well. Synthesizer enthusiasts were in awe of Zoog’s rack of noise machines and strap on controllers.
Around 10:30pm KMFDM took the stage for start one of the heaviest, hard hitting KMFDM shows to date. The lights went out, the crowd exploded as crickets; a dog and a banjo were heard over the PA. WWIII was the show opener. One of KMFDM’s most brutal songs foreshadowed what the crowd was in for that night.
The next two songs were some of KMFDM’s best in the last 3 years; Bait and Switch, and Tohuvabohu. As great as the new songs are, people still wanted to see vintage KMFDM. Son of a Gun gave the people the classic KMFDM fix they desired. After Hau Ruck is was KMFMD’s gorgeous female lead to take center stage singing Looking for Strange.
The second half of the show was packed with KMFDM staples. Megalomaniac, Attak/Reload, Drug Against War were all major crowd pleasers. However, one song stuck out as being the highlight of the night. Light always seems to have the most energy.
Los Angeles tour dates always seem to have big surprises. Tim Skold was welcomed on stage during the encores. The first song he did with the band was D.I.Y. This song was done the way it was suppose to be done live. Skold and Sascha going back and forth on singing the lyrics just as they recorded it on the album 10 years ago. Adios was next as well as the show closer Godlike.
The night was filled with stellar performances from all band members. Lucia sang seductively, and tweaked knobs alongside her husband Sascha; who, in true rock star form, ignored the California laws of smoking indoors and lit up while tweaking his keyboard. Steve White and Jules Hodgson are some of the best guitarists I have seen live. Andy Selway has the band player tighter than ever before with his on beat drumming and skillful drum fills.
This KMFDM tour was one of the best ever. The set list was the perfect mix of new and classic songs. The surprise of Tim Skold was the icing on the cake. It’s no wonder why even after 25 years KMFDM still brings the ultra heavy beat.
